Judging the top socially responsible companies

Last week I was honored to be a judge in the Global Sourcing Council 3S Awards. These awards recognize companies and individuals who implement sustainable and socially responsible sourcing practices. It means they look to not just create economic gains in the communities in which they work, but also generate a positive social and environmental impact. The nominees who my fellow judges and I selected will now attend a gala at the United Nations headquarters in May, where the winners will be rewarded. They will be announced shortly to allow them to travel.

One of the awards was the “Social Impact via Technology Innovation Award” which recognizes companies which use technology innovation to create a positive social and environmental impact. Nominees for the award for example include nearly 30 innovative companies. These companies have a variety of aims and use different technologies to achieve their goals, and it was inspiring to see the variety of companies. Just to give a couple of examples of nominees, ResQ has developed a mobile app to help fight unnecessary food waste among restaurants and cafes, while the company Kricket wants to use crowd mapping technology to help organizations better distribute humanitarian aid, and finally the Social Stock Exchange is helping people invest in businesses which are not just profitable, but also provide a social impact.

There is also an award, the People’s Choice Award, where anyone can vote, so please check out the site. If you would like to attend the ceremony in New York City, passes can be obtained by donation here.

As the CEO of Belatrix, this is a particularly important topic for me. Throughout the history of Belatrix I’ve wanted the organization to be a force for good. From working with nonprofit organizations such as the DANE Project which aims to use technology to help children with learning disabilities, to creating a scholarship program to help engineers from low-income areas access training opportunities, to ensuring we have recycling points throughout our offices, being a socially responsible company is a core part of who we are at Belatrix.

I’m proud of the work we have achieved here at Belatrix, and was delighted to have the chance to recognize other companies who also believe that their organization should work to create real positive change in the communities in which we operate.  I wish all the nominees the best of luck for the upcoming award ceremony!
